Improvement that can be made by smart textile for cutting risk

Learning Objectives:

• Apply what you will have learned during the course to design a new product based on smart textiles to solve issues reported in OH&S with traditional textiles

• Exercise critical thinking when faced with new challenges or problems to solve

Researchers have inventoried a series of problems encountered in OH&S (http://www.irsst.qc.ca/en/publications-tools/publication/i/101008/n/smart-textiles). Can you solve one of them using smart textiles (list of selected issues below)?

Topic:

Some tasks involve cutting risks for the hands and fingers. However, the proximity of rotating machines makes the use of cut resistant gloves unsafe due to the risk of having the hand caught in the rotating machine.

Steps:

– Gather information about the situation corresponding to that problem.

– Identify solutions based on smart textiles/materials that could solve the problem, and select the solution you feel is the best (justify why)

– Propose a design of the relevant textile product using the solution you selected (include choice of materials for the different components of the product)

Requirements:

Report: 10-15 pages, including illustrations and bibliography (indications about format in the syllabus).

The reports should be typed and in a proper format. (spacing 1.5, Font: e.g. Arial 11 or Times New Roman 12). References should be cited in APA format.
