Annotated Bibliography on effects of social media on people’s minds
Anderson, Monica, and Jingjing Jiang. “Teens, social media & technology 2018.” Pew Research Center 31 (2018): 2018.
This research found a strong relationship between social media and mental health. The authors evaluated social media usage trends and how it has managed to take its users into captivity. Literature materials on the area were reviewed, and the two authors interviewed focus groups before arriving at that conclusion. The authors also shared their concerns that social media pressure can lead to psychological issues and trauma (8).
Bashir, Hilal, and Shabir Ahmad Bhat. “Effects of social media on mental health: A review.” International Journal of Indian Psychology 4.3 (2017): 125-131.
In this research, the authors aimed to examine and establish a connection between the health of the minds of the current people and social media. The literature material available on the area was reviewed and synthesized. They found that there are dangerous effects on people’s mental health who are addicted to social media (6). They then proposed that since it is the government’s responsibility to look out for its citizens, it should protect them, especially the young population, from the effects that social media brings.
Boulianne, S. (2019). Revolution in the making? Social media effects across the globe. Information, communication & society, 22(1), 39-54.
Boulianne argues that social media platforms are arenas for engaging people in campaigns, political and social engagements, and civil lifestyles. The author used over one hundred cross-sectional studies and about six hundred and thirty estimated coefficients and found that social media’s effects are more massive on influencing political and social expressions but minimal on informing the participants. The political framework has impacts on the ability and effect of sharing one’s opinions on social media and the results that social media brings.
WitValkenburg, Patti M. “Understanding self-effects in social media.” Human Communication Research 43.4 (2017): 477-490.
This article reviews self-effects attributed to social media and how they compare and relate to self-reception. The author reviews four theories that elaborate on social media’s self-effects and then reviews each of the four theories concerning online social media platforms and explains why these effects are so powerful when dealing with online. The author conducted research and even developed a model that relates and suggests that self-effects amplify each other.
Proposed Purpose for the Literature Review:
The research’s literature review will evaluate various sources and analyze what previous researchers and authors have said about the topic. The research literature review will look at research that supports the hypothesis and research that contradicts the hypothesis. The research literature review will then compare the two ends and establish a relationship between the two presentations of arguments.
The research also seeks to advise social media users on the safe practices that they need to consider so that social media does not destroy their ability to socialize in day-to-day lives.
The proposed audience for the literature review
The literature review will be useful to future researchers on social media concerning human minds’ health. The literature review will also be useful to social media users who are stuck at crossroads wondering whether social media is destroying their minds. Lastly, the review will help medical experts and psychiatric institutions to explain the behavior changes and personality disorders attributed to social media influenced experiences.
