Disturbed covers Paul Simon’s 1965 lyrics in this version. Carlo Romeo calls this song a “hymn to resistance,” and, although the lyrics are opaque, they are powerful.

Resistance. Resistance means pushing back against something: what is this song warning its listeners against?

In this assignment, you will outline the proposed thesis statement and line of argumentation for your Research Essay.
A list of topics for the research essay is provided.
A Works Cited/References list is required.
NB: DO NOT WRITE THE ESSAY BEFORE RECEIVING FEEDBACK ON THE OUTLINE.

Additional Instructions:

Create an essay outline for your research essay. The outline should include the following information in each paragraph:
Introductory Paragraph
Thesis statement (in bold print)
Contextual information required before the argument begins
Body Paragraph 1
Topic sentence/claim to be argued in the paragraph
Evidence (minimum of two pieces) with in-text citation indicating the source(s)
Wrap: explanation of how this argument supports the thesis
Body Paragraph 2
Topic sentence/claim to be argued in the paragraph
Evidence (minimum of two pieces) with in-text citation indicating the source(s)
Wrap: explanation of how this argument supports the thesis
As many more body paragraphs as needed to prove the thesis statement. These additional body paragraphs may be indicated solely with a topic sentence (rather than a full outline with evidence and a wrap), if desired
Conclusion
Indication of wider context may be applicable (Johnston 7.4.1, #3)
End References (point form)
This is not a formal end references list: it is a list that keeps track of the sources we intend to use. It should include the surname(s) and title(s) of any works used in the outline. If works are brought in that are not present in the annotated bibliography, a fuller citation will be required (ideally with a link to the source for easy access).
NB: the end references do not count toward the assignment word count.

Additional Guidance:

Make sure the title of the text and the name of the author are part of your essay title, if applicable.
In the front matter on the first page of your essay, list your topic below the essay due date (e.g., 1.a: Colonialism in Thomas King’s “Borders”).
