    economies of most countries. In 1975, the heads of government of the seven largest industrialized economies (US, Japan, France, United Kingdom, West Germany and Italy) met to discuss how to promote international financial stability in an open and informal manner. The following year, Canada joined the meetings. After a few more years, the gatherings became regularized and served to provide a forum for the small and homogenous membership. It became known as the Group of 7.

Since 1987, the G7 finance ministers have cooperated to meet at least semi-annually, up to 4 times a year. In 1999, another group of 20 countries (called G20 or Group of 20) started meeting twice a year. It comprises additional countries like Brazil, China, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, and Turkey. Our perspectives view differently how international politics unfolds. Please provide a Constructivist account of what is going on. Don’t repeat my description but rather use a Constructivist “voice” to analyze the G7/G20. (18 points)

  1. Our textbook identifies something called the Beijing Consensus; in class, I called it the Asian Development model. Which perspective follows this economic strategy, what are its features, and how successful has it been in solving a country’s development problems? (18 points)

 

  1. This week, the ASEAN regional intergovernmental organization was supposed to meeting. Formed in 1961, it comprises 10 countries in South East Asia (not China), promoting cooperation and economic, political, military and security integration. Discussions includes a free trade agreement (the region represents 40% of world trade), the US-China trade war, and joint military exercises. In the background is China’s territorial claims in the South China sea. The Vietnam president again wants to know what to do. Vietnam joined ASEAN in 1995. Answer the following questions: Are regional trade agreements a stepping stone or a stumbling block to global peace for the region? What other regions have succeeded with these organizations? What are some risks? What do you advise the Vietnamese President? (18 points)
