In-Text Citation Checklist

• Put periods after the parentheses like this: Autonomy is about making choices about the shape of one’s life (Appiah, 2003).
• Make sure that there is a space between the end of the sentence and the parentheses like this: Autonomy is about making choices about the shape of one’s life (Appiah, 2003).
• Put quotation marks around direct quotes like this, and make sure to have the proper spacing and period placement like this: “Autonomy is a vision of human good; and the liberal state will aim to help the citizen exercise her autonomy, by, for example, providing information and encouraging rational public deliberation” (Appiah, 2003, p. 5).
• Also, use a lower case ‘p.’ like this: (Appiah, 2003, p. 5). Do not use “pg.”  If you would like to cite multiple, consecutive pages, cite like this with two p’s: (Appiah, 2003, pp. 20-22).  You may also cite multiple, non-consecutive pages like this: (Appiah, 2003, pp. 21, 27).
• For an article with two authors cite like this: (Deloria & Wildcat, 2001). That is, use an ampersand—&.  Do not use the word ‘and’.
• If you would like to cite more than one article at a time, make sure that the citations are listed in alphabetical order and separated by semi-colons like this: (Appiah, 2003; Dixson & Rousseau, 2005; Overall, 2010; Stoljar, 2017).
• For a peer view, cite like this: (S. Sittipunt, personal communication, April 25, 2019). Also, if there are multiple names, make sure to put them in alphabetical order and to use the ampersand, &, like this: (N. Bouricha, M. Reaves, & H. Wagner, personal communication, May 30, 2019).  Also, to find all the full names of students in class, click “People” on your Canvas page, and the names will appear.
• For videos, cite like this: (CNN, 2017); or (WGBH News, 2017). CNN and WGBH News are the entities who posted the video, and the date should be apparent on the YouTube post.
• If you would like to mention an author’s name in the text, you should do so like this: If nothing else, the notion of autonomy that we find in Appiah (2003) emphasizes the importance and imperative for each individual of deciding the shape of one’s own life, and this, in fact, is just what happiness is, for our purposes.
• If you mention an author’s name in conjunction with a direct quote, you should cite like this: If nothing else, the notion of autonomy that we find in Appiah (2003) emphasizes “the importance and imperative for each individual of deciding the shape of one’s own life” (p. 12), and this, in fact, is just what happiness is, for our purposes.
• Also, in general, for direct quotations, always put the citation directly after the quote, no matter where it falls in the sentence. Here are three examples:
