Visual Poetry, Graphic Text, Collage or other 2D Creative Work

you will create a visual poem or 2-dimensional artwork incorporating text within/as visual form (e.g. image/text collage, graphic text, etc.)

You may create your work in any medium and by any technique you wish – e.g. a work on paper, a 2D digital work, etc.

The goal of this assignment is to experiment with text and/or writing as a visual and material form and not as only a carrier of semantic information.

*You must include a 50-word statement describing your process for creating the work (your theme or inspiration, the materials and techniques used, etc.)

The submission guidelines for this assignment are as follows:

-If you create a physical object (a work on paper, collage, etc.), please scan your work or (if you do not have a scanner) take a photo of your work with careful attention to proper lighting, focus and perspective. Please ensure your image is of good quality/resolution so that all of the detail is visible

-Your work may be scaled to any size/dimensions, as long as you respect the 1-page format (i.e. a single continuous surface, no multiple pages)

-Do not use margins or borders around the edge of your work – unless this is part of your formal design

-Include your 50-word statement on a separate page

Submit your work in .pdf (Adobe Acrobat) format only.

*The maximum file size is 30 MB – please ensure your file does not exceed the size limit

Evaluation Criteria:

-Thoughtful and playful/exploratory use of visual language: colour, line, form, positive and negative space, texture, pattern, type-based choices (eg. font, size, colour, justification, etc).

-Strong use of image/visual to inform or guide conceptual understanding of piece: connection or deliberate discord between the image and word

-Compelling connection between chosen technique and content of text: collage, word-processed, drawn, painted, photocopied, frottage, redaction/additions, etc.

-Experimentation within the one-page parameter: size, margins, layout, orientation, columns, physical marks (eg. printed/folded/unfolded/scanned), surface

-Well considered written content – concise and powerful use of language showing consideration of language as a material (may be helpful to consider various containers: page, paragraph, sentence, word, letter – as one starting point!)
