6.1a) Messages about birth control or safer sex for populations (e.g., adolescents) can have both positive and negative outcomes. For example, STDs/HIV and unintended pregnancy might be reduced for a population and this would be considered positive. However, a boomerang effect might occur where the same population may feel judged or feel stereotyped as promiscuous, and thus ignore or become negatively reactive towards the message.
Show evidence and research arguing both sides of this scenario and then conclude with how the research has led you to back one or the other sides.
6.1b) Creating health campaigns around nutrition and individuals’ eating habits can have both positive and negative outcomes. For example, a positive outcome might be to reduce prediabetic states among youth. Though a negative outcome might be that the campaign makes impressionable youth feel even worse about their obese bodies, eating behaviors, and themselves (i.e., lowering their self-esteem).
