Chapter Two: Literature Review
In this research literature, the existing overlap between substance abuse and domestic violence has been considered and analyzed for more than 30 years. According to Simon and Brooks (2017), the copious literature on substance abuse and domestic violence is an extensive flaw and often contradictory. The research findings’ primary focus in this specialty is initially daunting, specifically about male orchestrators of domestic violence and substance abuse. Conversely, the principal evidence in this area outlines the puzzle about the impact of these research findings on the possible solutions. There are currently few perpetrators programs for survivors that counsel people systematically on the effect of substance abuse on the society, such as domestic violence, and just as limited are substance services that outline the problems of domestic violence for either the orchestrators or the victims. In the process of referral and trying to seek help from the authority or counselor, one of the problems is always lost (Fischel-Wolovick, 2018).
The literature focuses mainly, difficulties related to substance abuse orchestrators of domestic violence(Fischel-Wolovick, 2018). However, the resulting issues for children that emanate from living with substance-abusing parents are not discussed in this research. They are reported as the subject of significant and developing literature in the area. Finally, this article tends to determine the extent of the overlapping impact and outlines the reasons for such an overlap (Simon, & Brooks, 2017).
Domestic violence and patterns of substance abuse for victims without a doubt are very complicated. According to the research findings, all the past literature relating to women survivors draws from females utilizing alcohol and drug use agencies and females’ contact with the police. In the past, less or no attention has been given to the disastrous use of prescription medication. This research is further affected by problems related to invisibility and access. The stigmatization caused by alcohol and drug use issues for females is exacerbated for some due to religion and social, cultural issues, and the ideology of excluding women from refuges, which means that samples from refuge areas are incredibly skewed (Simon, & Brooks, 2017).
The research shows a shred of significant evidence connecting the vulnerability of the domestic violence victims to alcohol and drug use. Most of the studies discuss the use of alcohol. However, there is a developing literature on drug abuse and its connection to domestic violence (Simon, & Brooks, 2017).
The giver risk associated with substance use issues for domestic violence victims has been detected across various settings, including specialist midwife services, alcohol, drug use agencies, police domestic violence unit, refugee and outreach services, and hospital and emergency units. The extend of issues reported in this research varies depending on the research site and the necessary tools (Simon, & Brooks, 2017).
Alcohol and drug use related agencies show exceptionally high rates of service victims reporting domestic violence. According to the Swedish agency study, 65% of 67 women diagnosed for alcohol and drug use reported being bested at least twice, and 83% of these women had previously been in a relationship of chronic physical assault. Also, 36% of women treated for domestic violence were using drugs (Simon & Brooks, 2017). Similarly, United States studies have also demonstrated the same trends and results. Simon and Brooks’s study involving 300 women across six substance abuse agencies reported 70% of clients disclosing current or past domestic violence records and 39% saying recent domestic violence during their intake (2017). The rate of domestic violence at information was higher amongst the abuses of cocaine compared to users of alcohol and other unspecified drugs. Similarly, scrutinizing the substance agency’s details revealed that 70% of women experience physical assault or abuse in the previous four months. (Hinsliff‐Smith & McGarry, 2017).
When the literature review expanded the experience of alcohol and drug abuse to cover physical assault,the number of surviving women increased drastically. According to Hinsliff‐Smith and McGarry, research studies show that approximately 80% of women using alcohol and drug, experiences both current and past physical, and emotional abuse (2017).
Research in the United Kingdom of women with drug problems shows a terrifying overlap with physical and emotional assault. A study of 80 percent of people using drug abuse found that 45% of women reported being regularly physically assaulted by their current partners and 80% attacked by either past or current partners. Much of these reported assaults were at a critical end of the continuum, where about 60% of women requiring medical attention in the past year due to domestic partner violence (Hinsliff‐Smith, & McGarry, 2017). A study on opiate drug abusers showed that 40% reported domestic violence from the current partner, and 66% recorded a high flight conflict (Hinsliff‐Smith, & McGarry, 2017). These results match a study in Israel where it was found that women who were on a dual cocaine and alcohol abuse were six times more likely to report a physical assault by the current partner (Hinsliff‐Smith, & McGarry, 2017).
The results from samples drawn from refuges and emergency department and police unit report for physical assault incident outline a very critical, though lower, rates of domestic overlap between women’s alcohol and drug abuse and domestic violence. According to (Hinsliff‐Smith and McGarry, 28% of 521 women who reached out to the police unit recorded high to moderate drinking habits (2017). Similarly, 34% of 521 women treated in the hospital for physical assault-related issues recorded high to moderate drinking, while 15% injected drugs (Hinsliff‐Smith, & McGarry, 2017). A United States refugee camp-based study reported 32% of residents with substance use issues. Similar comparable rates of 23% of 100 residents with alcohol abuse records and 20% of drug use records were found in another refuge. But as people’s expectations, due to lack of exclusion procedures and guidelines, 50% alcohol use and 39% of drug abuse for the 30 women received outreach help (Bayes & Parker, 2017).
The studies show a significant group of women suffering from physical assault who have related issues of alcohol or drugs. The most supported theory, either qualitatively or quantitatively, is that women subjected to physical assault resort to alcohol and drug use to cope with attacks. In their report, Bayes and Parker outline the difference between the drinking pattern exhibited by men and women (2017). The study shows that women drink twice as much as women during the domestic violence incident; however, women’s drinking patterns changed twice as standard after the physical assault (Easton et al., 2018).
The connection between domestic violence and substance abuse is relevant to victims of abuse and perpetrators of the violence. The problem of casualty and the research question of the relationship between drinking and the severity of physical assault is given more weight. The issue related to drug use has popped up recently; there is a few research literatures in this specialty to date (Bayes & Parker, 2017).
Birttany, there was one main point in this lit review, which you made very clearly with reference to current literature, i.e. the link between subs abuse and being a female victims of DV. That could be explained in just one paragraph, so then in the rest of the lit review you focus on discussing how this link develops/operates, giving a deep understanding of the issue. Pls include doi in ref list, otherwise an excellent citation and referencing style. Please focus on writing more clearly. There were several times where I struggled to understand your message. You could give your work to a friend and ask them to give you feedback on readability.
