Final Project

The Final Project involves a paper analyzing a case study in conflict resolution.Explain how a conflict situationdemonstratesconcepts from the course (listed below). Use the standard academic format (12 pt. font, double spacing, and the first sentence of each paragraph indented one-half inch). It should be at least 5 pages long.

Keep the situation simple, such as between two people or two groups of people. Seek a more personal conflict, although not one you are involved with. Avoid large-scale circumstances, such as global or political conflicts; for example, do not select Arabs vs. Israel nor Democrats vs. Republicans.Neighborhood/community conflicts are fine.

You could use a conflict that is:

• real-life (not involving you, and about which you can remain objective)
• from the news (other than your Mid-Term Project situation)
• fictional (from a movie, TV show, or book)

TheProject Paper should include:

1. A description of the conflict scenario,including background information (who, where, when, why). Keep this section as concise and briefas possible (not longer than a paragraph or two); only use enough details to set the scene.(The paper should predominantly include your analysis, not the story.)

2. demonstrate your understanding by explaining how each of the following concepts from the course were involved:

1. Each party’s wants/needs not being met
2. Interdependence of parties involved
3. Worldview of each side
4. Culturalfilters at play
5. Gender filters at play
6. Any use of destructive conflict that escalated or obstructed easy resolution (Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness, and/or Stonewalling)
7. Demonstration of emotions; use of,or lack of emotional intelligence
8. Power Bases and power balance or imbalance; attempts to balance power
9. Conflict Styles at play (Avoidance, Obliging, Domination, Compromise, and/or Integration/Collaboration)
10. Conflict Systems at work (partners, triangles, coalitions, and/or “isolates”)
11. Negotiation and Mediation strategies utilized

3. Describe in detail whetheryou perceive that the conflict was resolved using a fair and balanced collaborative/integrative process. Or did it end a different way? Explain whether you agree if the resolution was fair and balanced – and if not, what do you think would have made the resolution fairer and more balanced.
