Please note one major change from Exam #1. For this exam essay, the questions are more open-ended, and you are not expected to answer every sub-question. Instead, chose one or two of the sub-questions to help guide your answer.

Please also note that the final page of the instructions includes a list of the primary sources from weeks 6-9. You must use three in your essay. I would highly suggest framing the essay around your three primary sources. What do they reveal about the question? How do they help you answer it? How do they trouble what you think you know about the question? Then, use the textbook and lecture content to frame your answer and provide context and evidence to help you make your argument. We are far more interested in your analysis of the sources than in your ability to summarize the textbook.

I am aware that the textbook contains additional primary sources. You may use these, but they do not count towards your minimum or three primary sources. This is why: I chose the sources that I did when designing the course because they speak to our themes and learning objectives for each week and many of them work together. Also, the course is set up so that you have discussed these sources with your peers on the discussion boards prior to the exam, so you have that practice and knowledge to help you write the essay — you aren’t approaching the sources “cold.”
