From the Baroque to the Classical

During the mid-part of the 1700’s, changes began in philosophy, culture, and the arts that ushered in a new era for music. The Classical Era in music history encompasses the years approximately 1750 (the year Bach dies) through about 1825. Two of the most famous composers in music history come from this era, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig von Beethoven

In this assignment I am asking you research a few topics that represent some of these new developments and ways of thinking.

I will not be giving you any links, you are to find your own sources for the information. You must consult AT LEAST 2 different sources. You also MUST INCLUDE CITATIONS as to where you found the information. Do not make a ‘works cited’ page. Simply state in your paragraph, “According to the website…….” If you do state you sources, you will not receive full credit. No cutting and pasting! Any evidence of cutting and pasting information is plagiarism and will result in a 0 for the assignment.

TOPICS

1. What is the rococo period in art and music history? What are the dates? Describe rococo style and sound. Identify two composers of musoic in the rococo style.

2. What are the general principles of the enlightenment period? How did the enlightenment philosophy play a role in music history?

3. What development in music history took place in Mannheim Germany? Why were these developments important?

4. Listen to the two musical examples in this module. One is Johann Sebastian Bach, the master of baroque style and a piece by Johann Stamitz who was one of the leading composers at Mannheim. In your own words, what is difference you hear between the two? Do you like better than the other? Why? If you like them both, what do you like about each one?
