The assignment:

The head of the public relations department of the international corporation you work for has asked you and your team to draft a Corporate Social Resposibility (CSR) strategy for the board of directors. In this strategy, you will explain the background of CSR and convince the board of directors of the importance of having such a strategy. In order to achieve this, your strategy is well-structured and contains at least the following elements:

– Introduction: introduce the research topic

– Short company profile of BP: Write a short company profile, focus on their CSR focal points. Also, find out what their pitfalls might be (for ex. have they received some bad press? Or are they yet not active in a CSR-area that you deem important?)

– Stakeholder analysis of BP: all relevant stakeholders should be identified and the interests of the corporation should be balanced against the interests of the other stakeholders.

– Focal point for final CSR strategy paper: the CSR focal point I choose is the improvement of BP’s ecological footprint. Due to the oil spill of 2010, BP has had a very negative public opinion. Try to figure out if BP has taken responsibility for their mistake and if they take CSR seriously, because BP is a worldwide multinational company with a big impact on social and environmental concerns around the world and, due to its importance and magnitude, I think BP should serve as a positive example to other multinational companies on the subject of CSR. Building upon this focal point, a key theme will cover greenwashing; a false conduct pretending to be ecologically responsible to the broader public to gain favor. BP also plans to be net zero in emmissions by 2050, try to figure out if it’s possible to reach those targets. There are articles that say it’s not possible to be net zero in emmissions by 2050, but a 80% reduction is.

– Conclusion and recommendations: draft your own CSR strategy for BP, thereby convincing the board of directors of the importance of upholding and promoting human rights standards and sustainable entrepreneurship.
