Ethical Principles

When people formally think about ethics, they often use thought experiments to consider general problems and determine the underlying values/principles that may be of use to guide decision-making about how we ought to behave towards others — people, places, and other species.

One such thought experiment is called the Trolley Problem. Please open this graded survey in another tab and complete it. You’ll earn full credit for completing it. Then return to this watch page and complete the lecture.

Thought Experiment: Trolley Problem

Many problems in life, at least the most challenging ones, are like this trolley problem. It’s not an easy choice between a good/ethical/right action and a bad/unethical/bad action where almost everyone would agree on what the right action is. Rather, it’s a choice between two bad options.

Reasonable and ethical people are going to differ in what they think the best action is, based upon a weighing of various personal values. They may all agree on the various ethical values at play in the choice, but weight these values differently, and in doing so, come to different decisions.
