Please respond to the prompt below. Do not start a new thread, however! Instead, be sure to open the existing thread and hit “REPLY” so that we all stay on the same thread. And, of course, be sure to read what everybody else has said before you post your response. And please post twice for full points! At least one of your posts should hit a 100 word minimum. The second can be as long or as short as you wish, and should respond meaningfully to what another student has said.
The Discussion Prompt
For such a small story, “Bullet” by Kim Church is extremely powerful. Perhaps that’s why the story’s most prominent symbol, the bullet, is so important. It represents both the genre of flash fiction (small but fierce) as well as the theme of multiple kinds of violence that the story conveys. I am especially curious, then, about what you made of the story’s first line:
“I know what a bullet can do.”
Indeed, what can a bullet do? Share with the class how you reacted as a reader when you first read the story’s first line. What did you think it meant? And how did your understanding of the bullet as an object or symbol change after you finished reading the story?
