Employee Motivation

Hello Professor/Classmates,

What is motivation? According to dictionary.cambridge.org, motivation is the enthusiasm for doing something, the need or reason for doing something, and willingness to do something or something that causes such willingness. I feel that motivation starts from within a person. Yes, a person can try to motivate another individual and push that individual to their potential, but if the individual does not have the willingness and motivation to push themselves, it will not happen. You must want to push yourself for greatness and to like and enjoy what it is you are doing. When you notice a lack of motivation from your employees, it is best to ask the appropriate, allotted questions to determine why they lack motivation and poor job performance if their performance is not up to par. Sometimes, employees will open to you and express what they are feeling and what is going on with them within the workplace. As a leader, it also starts with you and makes sure you exhibit excellent leadership styles/skills such as your communication, fairness, and motivation. Employees look at the leader’s motivation and job performance, as well. Employees pay attention to how leaders handle certain situations and how they treat employees. It is essential to run a successful company/department where the leader and employees/team meet goals/deadlines and work collectively to get the job done and run a successful business. We all know from personal experiences ourselves how the work environment can be overwhelming and challenging. That is why it is crucial to have thorough communication and professionalism in the workplace and motivation. It is vital to show appreciation to employees for their hard work, dedication, and time they put into their work. When we think about it, as employees, we spend most of our time at work away from our family and spend much time with our coworkers and leaders. Therefore, it is essential to have a great, relaxing work environment as much as possible and to talk through and work through any issues that arise and occur. Recognition and word of mouth saying “job well done” goes a long way too. Employees want to know they are doing a good job and they are excelling within their careers. However, when unfairness, favoritism, and lack of concern goes unaddressed, that is when poor job performance and lack of motivation comes into play. The last thing as a leader, you want to see your employees do is to fail, and the company goes downhill. When issues and concerns raise employees’ concerns, the leader’s attention, active listening, and changes should occur. As a leader, the last thing you want to happen is to start losing great workers due to a lack of concern and leaving situations unaddressed. When leaders and employees work together as a team, and everyone is motivated with goals and duties to fulfill, the work environment is full of happiness, hard workers, and completed tasks.

In the healthcare industry, motivation is crucial because you have employees in the health field that enjoy helping people and making others day when they feel they have nothing left. It takes a passionate, caring, and strong individual to work in the health field, and you must love and enjoy what you do, or your actions will show otherwise. For example, look around us at what is going on now during this pandemic. In the healthcare field, employees risk their lives and family lives daily as they are caring and trying to nourish others back to good health. They are taking risks and challenges daily and handling the expected with the unexpected. What if healthcare workers did not have the compassion, love, and motivation to do what they do day-to-day? There would be more deaths, and the world would be in even more chaos.
