Literature Review

Write and discuss the extent to which the film displays the various sub-stages of the “hero’s adventure” as per in-class discussion of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth pattern. Your thesis should specify to what extent you think the film’s fit to the monomyth pattern is strong or weak, and ideally will give some idea as to specific features that you will go on to highlight and elaborate on in your essay body. Explain which character in that video could be said to be “haunted” and how the audience is intended to react to the character. Your thesis should clearly identify the character and the intended audience reaction, and your body paragraphs should defend this thesis by explaining how the music video’s lyrics, imagery (e.g. objects and/or persons that the character interacts with), sound, and other aesthetic elements illustrate the haunting and/or steer the viewer toward a particular response (e.g. empathy, anger, learning a lesson, etc.). Here are a few music videos that I recommend for this assignment, but you can also choose something else (e.g. any genre of music is okay), provided that the music video you write on is an “official” one:
