What issues do you see?
The issues I see when looking at Japan’s culture is that the companies that do busy in Japan are distribution companies for the United States and I find that most men work in these companies like this then women do. This could be because women are forced to stay home and not work. It stated in an article that “the government started to push the notion of “cultural diplomacy” through popular cultural products and insisted that the content industry could be the new leading industry of the Japanese economy” (Takeshi Matsui, 2014, Pg. 82) The Government wants Japanese’s culture to be considered more than just a place that distributes product for the United States. They want to make the economy better and culture better by providing more than just workforce.
What would be the best method(s) to solve the issues?
The best method to solve this issue for Japan not just to be considered a culture that works is using individualism which will allow the people that live in Japan to make their own path instead of just working. The other method would be collectivism this will allow more women to work in the workforce and allow men to have more freedom to do more than just work.
Evaluate how the cultural differences of your selected culture could create communication challenges or barriers within organizational settings
Japan’s culture is very different from other cultures as like I stated before more men work in the workforce than women and in the United States it is the opposite. This can cause a barrier because when people that worked in Japan come here to work they will not be used to having a women as a superior because of their cultural beliefs. It stated in an article that “Worldwide business organizations have discovered that intercultural communication is a subject of importance—not just because of increased globalization, but also because their domestic workforce is growing more and more diverse, ethnically and culturally” (Kinsey Goman, C., 2011) the intercultural communication might cause a barrier for people that are from Japan that want or have to come to work in the United States. This might cause them to change their mind. The way to address these issues as a OD practitioner is to make sure that they people that are coming from Japan to work in the United States that they are given a course on what the culture is like in the United States to better understand how are culture is different from theirs and how we will make sure that we try and honor their beliefs too.
