For this exercise, first read the prompt, What Do They Mean. Here take time to understand the kind of reading you need to do to write a good summary and how to think about your audience. As you read, try making a comment or annotation on the pdf that others might also see and find helpful. For example, which part of the instruction seems important to remember? Then look over the doc, Says-Does. Here you learn how an author both says something (makes points, creates content) and does something (the rhetorical choices, the way they write or address their audience). Note how the writing changes from summary to analysis and how the analysis uses specific underlined words. These words are good to learn! You can then practice summary and analysis on the article by Pennycock and Rand. Read through once. Think or make notes in the Google Doc below: What are they saying about Fake News? What is the “rationalization camp” approach to Fake News? Do the authors agree with it? Pennycook and Rand state that they ran a set of studies to test the possibility that acceptance of fake News is explained through “cognitive laziness.” What do their finding show? As you read, you can annotate it directly, and read the comments of others, a collective reading. Now it is time to write! In your summary make sure to state the authors and title, and then use Pennycock and Rand or the authors to refer to them. Try to state at least 3 main points. Use some of their language like “cognitive laziness” and use quotation marks to distinquish it from your own voice. Write a response and remix at the end, sharing your opinion.
