Client Education Assignment
Client education is a key aspect of the medication administration process. The registered nurse must properly educate clients about a medication prior to administering it. Registered nurses must also have appropriate tools and instructional resources in order to properly educate clients, such as an education pamphlet, handout, brochure, or video demonstration depending on the client’s learning style. Students will select one specific medication from the classifications listed below and provide client education for the selected medication. The student must send the course faculty their top three (3) medication classification choices for the assignment by week five (5) as well as the type of instructional resource you will provide (i.e. song, commercial, pamphlet, handout, brochure, advertisement, social media campaign, children’s book, website, etc.) and your target audience. The topic selections will be on a first come, first serve basis and the topics are divided equally between students in the course. If no choice is submitted, the course faculty will assign the topic, target audience, and instructional resource. The rubric for the assignment is posted in Moodle.
The target audience must be identified to determine the appropriate instructional resource; the target audience must be identified on the instructional resource. The instructional resource should be tailored to your specific target audience. The instructional resource should not include medical jargon, abbreviations, or acronyms. It should read at a 6th grade reading level or at the reading level of your target audience. It must be your own original concept, idea, and layout. Use of APA format is required for this assignment. Printed resources should be in an easy-to-read font and clear graphics must be displayed. The topic information must flow into the next subject matter. Please remember, this assignment is targeting a person that is NOT a nursing student or in the medical field! Be sure to select an instructional resource that will cover all of the criteria. When submitting the assignment please indicate the type of resource, assigned medication classification, your name, as well as the target audience on/with the resource!
Provide support for your assignment using three (3) resources you found in the professional literature. Use references generated within the last five (5) years. Remember, do NOT use web sites that are not associated with government or professional agencies/organizations. You may use your textbook, professional/governmental web sites, and journal/research articles found in the library databases. You must include a minimum of three (3) scholarly references in your assignment. Cite all resources using the APA guidelines found in Sections 7.01, 7.02, 7.03 of the 6th edition APA manual. Please ensure that the paper is grammatically correct and formatted properly according to APA. Please be sure to utilize in-text citations throughout the document (even pictures)!
The instructional resource must include:
Purpose of the medication
2-3 client objectives using Bloom’s Taxonomy
Generic and trade names
Common side effects and how to manage them
Adverse effects to immediately report to the healthcare provider
Objective findings for the client to monitor at home (weight, labs, vital signs, blood glucose, etc.) with appropriate education on how to monitor
Medication Administration
Best time to take medication
How to administer medication including route and administration instructions
If the medication can be taken on an empty stomach or with food
Precautions/Interactions with foods or other medications
Nonpharmacological therapy to treat or prevent disease without medication (does not include how to manage side effects). For example instead of using antidiarrheals to treat diarrhea, dietary changes such as toast and bananas can help to improve diarrhea.
