Document Design Assignment

1. Select a piece of writing that can be improved by reformatting the text. Make a copy of the writing you will be working with.

2. Redesign the document, so that the physical layout of the text helps a reader to read effectively. The reader should be able to see the basic organization of the text easily.  The document should also be visually appealing.  As you redesign the document, you may want to use some of the following:

• putting the most important information first
• lists (enumerated or bullets)
• headings
• highlighting techniques, such as bold face, italics, underlining, and color
• white space
• various fonts and type size
• appropriate length of lines
• effective margins

3. Compose a memo of transmittal for your document design assignment. Address the following ideas in your memo of transmittal:

• where the original document came from
• what you see as ineffective in terms of document design
• what strategies you have used as you have made the document

more accessible.

4. Collate the assignment in this order:

• memo of transmittal
• the original document
• the revised version of the document

5. Submit your assignment to the eCampus DropBox. Make sure to include the memo of transmittal providing a breakdown of the strategies that you have used in the makeover and copies of the original and revised version (so that I can see the changes that you have made).
