How did civil rights activists practice Civil Disobedience?

We are reading Chapter 3 in our textbook (Desmond/Emirbayer). Chapter 3 gives us a glimpse into the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s and the fight for equality for people of color in the United States. It was not until 1965 that the Voting Rights Act was passed, which gave African Americans the right to vote. However, still today, people of color are disproportionally disadvantaged when it comes to access to voting. Why? The chapter will explain this in more detail in the section on “Voting”, starting on page 104. (The textbook is uploaded as an attachment below)

This unit focused very heavily on the Civil Rights Movement, Voting Rights, and The Black Panthers. All of these topics highlight that the effects of slavery are still felt today and how social protest has brought about some of the changes in very recent history.

For example, find an article or artifact from at least two places: An American news source, a piece of art (music, written, paint, etc.), an international news source (in English language), or something else relevant that may provide an example or argument that relates to the topic. Some news sources are provided in the course shell in the left-hand menu. However, you may find a different item that would help underscore the issue or your argument.

3. Conclusion. Here, you tie the readings, film, and your found article/item together. What is your take-away in response to the prompt? What are you making of this issue after having done some research?

4. Discussion questions: Provide three (3) discussion questions that you would like your classmates to respond to.

Always cite your sources and provide references at the end of your paper.
