  • Follow standard report format – 12 pt font, 1.5 space.

  • Be factual and accurate

  • Be between 6-10 pages in length



Purpose of the Report


First, you will report out regarding the company/organization that you worked for, as well as the personal on-site experience you had. This can be a highly influential for future students making employment decisions.


Next, the practicum report is a reflective piece that requires you to stop and think about what you considered to be valuable learning while on your practicum – both on a personal and professional level.

It is necessary to look back at your original practicum objectives when engaging in reflection. Be sure to list these.


Finally, the practicum report will help you in your forward thinking approach regarding what’s next in your own professional development and career. What are your next steps? This is where critical thinking and making linkages is important. How will you continue to develop personally? What skills (both hard and soft) do you wish to build upon? How can you be proactive in making sure that your personal development and career plan is met in the near future?


Report Structure 3 Parts


The report is to be divided into 3 short sections based on the above.


  1. First, share details about the company/organization you worked for, and specifics about your job.

(You are not required to disclose any confidential corporate information, use your judgment.)

  1. Next is the reflective piece where you review your learning objectives and expand upon your individual experience at your workplace.
  2. Finally, include a closure piece where you push your thinking forward while considering next steps in your personal development and career. I.e. discuss your next steps academically, or your next employment action to be taken.
  3. Include the completed self-assessment form and submit online on Moodle.

Part 1 – Provide some background information… (up to 3 pages max)


  1. Organization Overview


Describe the organization you worked for.

  • What type of organization is it (chain, single proprietorship, partnership, franchise etc.)?
  • Include a small organizational chart showing job titles and hierarchy of more than 3 employees.
  • Include a brief description of the organizations’ mandate / goals.
  • Discuss the challenges that the company is facing that you contributed value to.

  • Which department did you work for? To whom did you report?
  • Describe the major functions / duties you performed.
  • What are you proud of that you accomplished during your time with the company/’



  1. Training and Orientation


Describe any on-the-job orientation and training that you received.

  • How did you learn how to do the job? Formal training? Personal instruction by your supervisor? Peer-to-peer learning – did you pick things up from co-workers? Figured things out for yourself?
  • Describe the various ways you learned about appropriate behaviors as well as work tasks or products.
  • What was your supervisor like to work with? Did he or she provide helpful feedback?


  1. Company Culture


Share your observations regarding the company culture.

  • How would you describe the organization climate and the management style adopted by the people / person(s) you worked for?
  • What were the main differences between organizations in Canada and your home country that you observed?


Part 2 – Now for the reflective part … ( 3-6 pages)



  1. Opportunity to Apply your new knowledge (you can use bullet points in this section to answer each of the 5 questions)


  • List specific examples of when you were able to apply the business theories, frameworks and approaches you learned in class during your practicum to solve some of the company’s problems.
  • Identify and list which specific regulatory processes, business rules, legal concepts, financial or human resource knowledge you were able to apply and use during your practicum.
  • List examples of when you were able to use your ability to analyze a business problem and propose a creative, practical solution using reasoned strategies and arguments.
  • Identify and list any business tools, technologies, or methods you used on the job.
  • List any opportunities you had to apply numerical literacy to the analysis, management and implementation of contracts, policies, or financial strategies at work.

  • What did you learn about North American business practices that you didn’t already know?
  • What 5 key cultural, socio-economic, or political differences in business practices did you discover in between your country and Canada? (bullet points are fine)

  • Would you recommend this position to future practicum students?
  • On a scale of 1 (poor) and 10 (excellent), how would you rate your work experience from a learning perspective?
  • What could YOU have done differently to get more out of this work practicum?

  • Which skills do you wish to develop further?
  • What specifically will you do next to ensure you continue to build on the skills you learned in this program?
  • Where do you envision yourself going now – what plans do you have for your next step?
  • What is your overarching career goal?
  • Did your practicum work experience confirm or alter your career goal?
  • How can you now leverage and build upon the relationships you formed through your work experience?
  • Now that you have had this work experience, what are you plans for your next job? (What jobs will you pursue next to get you closer to your career goal?)
  • What (Cap or other) courses (or credentials) will you take to help you gain the skills/knowledge to reach your long-term career goal?
