Directions:
The final paper is 3-5 pages (but must be a full three pages). It will deal with the required text, The Other Slavery. The purpose of the paper is to deal with the issue of enslavement. As you have learned through the semester, racial slavery developed in the western hemisphere after 1492 and broke in many important ways from previous historical systems of enslavement. While there were particularities in the system of racial slavery in different parts of the western hemisphere (differences from Barbados, Bolivia, and the US south for instance) it was central in the creation of social, economic, and political systems.
On the North American continent, Native-American and African-American slavery emerge in tandem. Enslavement in many areas is foundation in the economic system, especially in the emergence of capitalism.
In the essay you will explain the scope and scale of enslavement from contact through Reconstruction. Why did it emerge? What were the key developments, issues, pieces of legislation, etc.? Lastly, you will articulate your understanding racial slavery’s lasting legacies.
(For example: If racial slavery was central to the creation of the capitalist world system, was it worth the cost of millions of human lives and the system of racial discrimination that continues? Why or why not? Explain the historical evidence you used to come that conclusion and what it then means for our contemporary society.)

- The essays needs to be 3 full pages double-spaced.
- 1 inch margins.
- Times New Roman font, 12 point
- Written in the past tense
- You will need to use Resendez’s The Other slavery and cite it at least twice (you cannot use anything in the introduction) and use at least one of the additional readings, citing it at least twice. (For a total of at least 4 in-text citations).
- Cite your sources parenthetically.
- The essay should be grammatically clean.
