Topics. You will select a problem (Some company do not use social media marketing and how is that effecting their business) and explain how your skills with communication can help them overcome this obstacle. Explain this problem to the class, as if we are an organization’s leadership team. Your goal is to be hired by the organization as an organizational member or as a consultant, or receive a promotion in an organization of which you are already a part.

As you are researching the problem and relevant communication theories, concepts, and examples, ask the following questions about the topic:

    • How can you shape the topic so it will be of interest and value to your audience?
    • How will you find credible research material on the topic?
    • How can you use visual aids professionally and effectively communicate your topic?
    • Can you pair a learning activity with your theory and examples?

Organization. Review the guidelines for organization relevant to the introduction, body and conclusion of a speech and how those are broken down. Select 3-5 main points to cover in the body of your speech and arrange them in a logical order. Be sure to preview your main points between the introduction and the body of your speech so that the audience will be able to follow you easily. Be creative when planning an attention getting opening and a closing with impact. Use your formal outline to help organize your speech.

Content/Research. Your main points will be expanded with sub-points (claims), using a variety of support (grounds & warrants) – examples, statistics, stories, facts, explanations, etc. Be sure that each main point is fully developed with adequate sub-points and support. At least 10 credible outside sources are required for this speech. Clearly cite each source orally (citing the authors’ names, year of publication, and source type) prior to using information from the source. Balance the amount of material in each main point.

Visual Aids. The use of visual aids is required to help explain your subject. These may be PowerPoint, presentation software. If you want to incorporate a video in your presentation, clear it with me first (the video should not take up a significant amount of time). There is no requirement on the number of visual aids as long as what you use is significant in the speech and truly aids in the audience’s understanding of the topic. Follow the guidelines for the proper use of visual aids as discussed in the lessons (and in the readings). Be sure to rehearse your speech using visual aids so that you can effectively incorporate them into your speech. You MUST provide an electronic copy of all visual aids and the notes with the outline when you submit your speech.

Audience Involvement. One goal of this assignment is to help your audience connect to the material through an interactive component or training activity (I’m expecting this to be some kind of demonstration of how your skills can be helpful to the organization). The activity can be a small group activity, a game, a participatory demonstration, etc. The activity will be graded in terms of creativity, applicability, audience involvement, value, and memorability. Consider breaking your activity up into the follow phases when planning: Introduction/explanation of activity, activity, debriefing/wrap up indicating the significance of the activity.

Connection. Connection with the audience is important throughout the speech. Plan ways to make the audience feel that your topic relates to them personally and keep them involved and engaged during the presentation.

Delivery. ( I will be recording the video ) Your presentation should be well rehearsed and presented in a conversational yet professional style with strong eye contact, appropriate volume and vocal variety, use of gestures, and movement to establish immediacy with your audience. Devote adequate time to rehearsal.

*The final presentation should be 20-30 minutes in length when I record it

Presentation Breakdown:

      • Introduction and Overview
      • Part 1. Informative presentation (explanation of problems and practical solutions) [10-20 minutes]
      • Part 2. Training Workshop [Create an activity)
      • Conclusion
