Writing Assignment #2 – Examine A Myth
This assignment is similar to DF1, in which you were asked to describe a favorite myth and explain its appeal. For Writing Assignment #2, elaborate on a specific myth that you find intriguing, uniquely enjoyable, or rather distasteful (but not the same one that you wrote about in DF1). Now that you have examined the mythologies of several societies and been exposed to many varied myths, you should not lack for ideas. Your myth must be from one of the mythologies covered in this course: that is to say, it needs to be Greek/Hellenistic, Roman, Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Celtic, Norse, Arthurian, African, Mesoamerican, or Native American. Since this is not an overly lengthy assignment, it is probably best to narrow your area of concentration, as opposed to broadening it and taking on an overly ambitious topic. In other words, were you to write about Hercules’s labors, it would make more sense to limit the scope of your writing assignment to one single labor rather than all twelve of them.
In researching the myth on which you chose to focus, you can gather information in several ways: online [with Google, Wikipedia, Encyclopedia Mythica (https://pantheon.org/), Theoi Greek Mythology (https://www.theoi.com/), or whatever search engine or website proves useful]; scholarly
