Scenario-Based Plan Paper
***Please read this document in its entirety before you begin your paper***
Scenario:
Political and Religious (Cultural) Conflict
Shirley Bennett and Britta Perry work in accounting for G & L Properties, LLC (the Company), based in Omaha, NE. The Company is a real estate development company that builds, leases, and manages luxury apartment complexes throughout the greater Omaha Metropolitan Area.
Shirley is a devout Christian who always votes Republican and has religious figurines in her cubicle. She attended Concordia University in Nebraska (a private, coeducational institution of higher learning founded by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) and earned her undergraduate degree in accounting. A rural Iowa native, she is married to her husband and has two children.
Britta, by contrast, is a professed atheist and progressive who feels that extremely religious people are less intelligent. She wanted to go to college near the mountains and attended Portland State University (a public university in Oregon), majoring in business, with a minor in feminist studies. She grew up as a “military brat” where her father was most recently stationed at Offutt Air Force Base before his retirement. She decided to come back to the area to help her ailing father in the last years of his life, who is currently diagnosed with liver cancer.
Both women try to avoid discussing politics or religion at work, but they both know the other’s feelings on current events. At times, there is palpable tension.
One day Shirley comes to work wearing a shirt declaring support for a Republican candidate for political office (a “Make America Great Again” shirt), and Britta decides she has had enough. She feels this action is alienating and hostile. If you took an anonymous poll in the office, however, the vast majority of the office secretly take some satisfaction that this upsets Britta.
She is threatening to not only quit, but to sue the company for allowing a hostile work environment.
Both employees are equally outstanding in their work performance.
You are the General Manager for G & L Properties, LLC, and the de facto person responsible for this situation.
Note: The general scenario idea was provided by Managestaff.com; however, it was significantly edited by the instructor to create this assignment.

Prepare an MLA style paper. There are essentially two components of this “scenario” to manage (or to write your paper about):
What will you do with Shirley and Britta, specifically? After all, you want to avoid a lawsuit.
This should be the beginning part of your paper and should be roughly one-page long.
What policies, procedures, protocols, or training will you put in place to ensure that employees with differing beliefs and opinions feel comfortable working together?
This should be the last part of your paper, and make up roughly two-pages.
In this part of the paper, employ the Planning, Organizing, and Controlling functions of management to create a scenario-based plan in an MLA style paper. In other words, since this is a cumulative assignment, use everything you have learned in this class to help inform how you will handle this situation.
Be sure to consider the duration and frequency of said policies, etc. Make sure they are measurable and specific. After all, you want the work environment at your company to contribute to a mutually beneficial working situation for both the employer and the employee.
Below are the MGMT11 chapters associated with planning, organizing, and controlling (that were covered in this class). These chapters and concepts should be the primary source and framework for handling this situation (and writing your paper):

6 Organizational Strategy
7 Innovation and Change
Organizing
9 Designing Adaptive Organizations

11 Managing Human Resource Systems
