1. Our current campaign-advertising system markets candidates just as we market automobiles and beverages. Should we require that candidates can only stand in front of cameras and explain their stands on the issues as opposed to creating commercials that resemble advertising for commercial products? Should candidates be forbidden to use negative advertising? Should television networks be mandated to provide free political advertising? What problems might occur in constructing and implementing such a rule?
2. Ask students how their parents’ party identifications have affected their own choice of party? Is there a strong relationship between the party choices of the parents and the children? According to the students’ religious affiliation, ethnicity, gender, residence, and social class, what party would they expect to be more inclined to support?
3. Ask students if they are familiar with the concept of negative partisanship, that is, a feeling not so much of wanting their “side” to win, but to see the other side lose. Do they think there is a lot of negative partisanship at play in the current political climate? Do they ever have feelings of negative partisanship, and if so, how has this affected their political behavior?
4. Can democracy be sustained when so few people are involved in the political system? Voter turnout in a local election can run less than 10 percent, yet local governments are the ones that affect people more closely on a daily basis. Why do more people not vote in America? Explain.
5. Are students registered to vote? Did they register when they obtained their driver’s license, if possible? Have students ever voted? Why or why not?
6. In most cases, convicted felons’ rights are restored to them after completion of their sentences, except for the right to vote. In view of the large number of people incarcerated in the United States, is it time we change this policy? Explain.
