1)Discuss the main function of electrolytes and what happens if the electrolytes are out of balance. What does electrolyte balance have to do with execution by lethal injection? Based on what you find, discuss as a class if you think lethal injection is humane or inhumane. If you think lethal injection is inhumane, examine a better alternative.

2)A) Why would a drug calledrenin inhibitors be effective in treating hypertension?

B) A toddler in Africa travels to a remote area with no access to clean drinking water. He drinks sewage water and soon develops severe diarrhea and dies 10 days later of cardiac arrest. Explain the possible physiological cause(s) of his death.

C) A patient with poor blood flow to the kidneys is treated with an ACE inhibitor and goes into renal failure. Explain the reason for the renal failure.

3)MRSA is a terrible disease that is very difficult to control. Recent conversation has emerged as to whether or not the current methods of screening and contact are truly effective. Research and explain MRSA, its current methods of control, and how changes can be beneficial and/or harmful?

4)A. Summarize one example illustrating how microbes benefit human health. Can the removal of microbes actually lead to disease development?

B. Trace the path taken by pathogens from various portals of entry, through the establishment of disease, and ending with their exit from various portals in the host.

C. Conduct additional research and answer the following: Discuss what policies are in place at local, state, and federal government levels to prohibit the spread of disease in the case of a pandemic.

D.There are some who believe that HIV does not cause AIDS. Have all of Koch’s postulates been met for HIV as the causative agent that leads to the development of AIDS? Cite evidence to explain your answer.
