Part A
Read “’Natural and Inalienable Right to Freedom’: Slaves’ Petition for Freedom to the Massachusetts Legislature, 1777”. To whom is the letter addressed? How do the slaves use religion to sway their petition? How do they compare themselves to the colonists who are fighting the British for their independence?
After you have read “George Hewes’ Recollection of the Boston Massacre”, how does it compare with the account in your textbook? Is there more or less bias in Hewes’ account? Is it more believable than the account in your textbook? Explain your answer.
According to William Manning in “A Laborer, Explains Shays Rebellion in Massachusetts: ‘In as Plain a Manner as I Am Capable’” how did Shay’s Rebellion occur? Most importantly, how could an uprising, by working people, be curtailed in the future?
Part B
There were many causes of the American Revolution: mercantilism, the French and Indian War, the Proclamation Act of 1763, as well as the many taxes passed on the colonists. Explain which had the most impact on the colonists to declare independence and why.
Which groups were missing in the Constitution? How does this reveal a contradiction in this document?
Did the United States really win the War of 1812? Examine the terms of the peace settlement and the end results of the war. What was gained? What was lost? What was the larger victory for America?
