Rhetorical Analysis of an Article

A rhetorical analysis is an in-depth examination of the types of writing strategies used by an author. You will choose an article to analyze and assess. No outside research is required for this assignment, but you will be paraphrasing and quoting from the original article being analyzed AND from Chapter 4: Writing a Rhetorical Analysis, therefore your essay will need to include in-text citations and a References page. To aid you in the creation of APA style citations and the References page entry, please review the videos located in the weekly Supplemental Resources section.
Select one article from Chapters 17-25 in your e-book. You will then summarize, analyze, and evaluate the article. Your analysis should make an argumentative claim as to what specific rhetorical strategies are effective or ineffective. Evaluate how and why these elements work or do not work, and provide evidence.
1. Write an introduction where you identify the article title and author. Your introduction should also include a thesis statement that clearly defines the direction of your analysis.
2. Write a brief summary of the article – keep it to one paragraph.
3. Identify the rhetorical situation, the writer’s means of persuasion (i.e. logos, ethos, and/or pathos), and the rhetorical strategies used.
4. Discuss why or why not the piece of writing is persuasive and HOW it is persuasive.
5. Finish with a conclusion that ties back to your thesis statement.
In this essay you must use examples from the article as evidence to support your thesis. These direct quotations will require in-text citations – PLEASE LIMIT the use of direct quotations. They are needed for support, not as the bulk of your essay. You MUST also cite your textbook reading in Chapter 4: Writing a Rhetorical Analysis on logos, ethos, and pathos. You may either paraphrase this chapter or use a direct quotation; either way, your citation should support your argument regarding effective/ineffective persuasion. It is IMPERATIVE that you clearly understand logos, ethos, and pathos to successfully complete this essay.

Your final essay should also meet the following requirements:
• APA format for the entire essay: 12-point font Times New Roman, 1″ margins, title page with header.
• 3-5 pages of text. Does not include the title page or references page.
• Third person narrative (do NOT use I, me, we, us, you in any essays in this class).
• Analysis of a SINGLE article.
• An APA References page with two sources – the original article and your textbook. This means you will also have at least two in-text citation(s) to correspond to the sources.
