Writing Assignment 1: Developing Your Analytic Voice
This assignment is meant to help you develop your own analytic voice. You are a scholar of popular culture!
You may choose a popular culture product/form/event of your choice that was produced/created within the last year. Considering Marchetti and Hall (though you don’t need to reference them directly), please give a brief description of the thing you are writing about, and then analyze it by answering the following questions:
Considering what Marchetti argues about how popular culture operates, what are the contradictory interpretations that you see possible in the thing you are analyzing? Are dominant ideologies privileged/ultimately supported or upheld? How?
** The most important part of this paper is for you to show HOW, using evidence from the thing you are analyzing. For example, rather than merely telling me that the lyrics of a song challenge traditional gender roles, quote a lyric and then explain how you see them challenging traditional gender roles.
Your assignment should be about three double spaced pages in length.
You do not need to do any research for this assignment, or to cite any course materials.
The tone/style does not need to be overly formal — you can use “I/me”— but you should proofread, and use the following format:
12 point font, Times New Roman
1” margins
Double spaced, Pages numbered
Header includes your name, the title of the class, and the date
Proofread the paper before turning in
A works cited if necessary (you should make a citation for a movie, tv show, song, etc. but you don’t need to if you’re writing about a live performance you attended; if you’re using a video of a performance, you’ll need to cite that recording)
