You must complete an Annotated Bibliography, that previews your research for the final paper. This requires a minimum of seven sources: a novel, one biographical source about the author, one or two critical analyses of the novel’s cultural and historical setting, and three to five cultural sources about the city and country during the specific time period of the novel’s setting. Creating an annotated bibliography is a great way to keep your research and thoughts organized as you write your essay.

You will need a variety of reliable, authoritative, full-text, academic (though not necessarily peer-reviewed) sources (a minimum of six/maximum of eight secondary sources) you plan to use in your essay plus the primary source, which is the novel you have chosen to read. Websites are not allowed as sources. Following this assignment description, you will find links to several resources and worksheets that may help you in the research process, along with a sample of a completed and correctly formatted Annotated Bibliography.

You will provide a full MLA-style entry for each of the sources, just like you would on the Works Cited page of your essay (listed alphabetically). However, under each entry you will (1) include a summary of that source, (2) provide a brief discussion of how the source will be useful in your essay, and (3) capture important quotations or passages that you wish to quote in your own essay. Do remember that the rules for quotations apply even in this bibliography: they need to be introduced with an attribution tag showing the credentials of the author and/or the authority and reliability of the source, placed in quotation marks, and cited with a parenthetical in-text citation with page number. You may find that some entries are longer than others, which is fine. However, each of the seven entries should be at least one full paragraph and contain at least one direct quotation.

If done correctly, this bibliography will be an invaluable resource as you complete your Multicultural Research Paper. However, you may certainly make changes if you need to before you compose the final draft of your paper. For example, you may find as you begin writing that a source is not as helpful as you anticipated, so you will need to do more research to find another reliable, timely, credible source. Therefore, your actual Works Cited in your final essay and your Annotated Bibliography may vary.

The Basics:

7 minimum/9 maximum sources each with correctly formatted Works Cited entry, paragraph length summary, brief discussion of how the source will be useful, and important quotations that are introduced with an attribution tag and cited with parenthetical in-text citation
Use appropriate MLA formatting (typed, 12-point Times New Roman font, double spaced, MLA pagination and heading)
Proper MLA (8th edition) style citations (this makes for an easy transition to your Works Cited page in your final essay)
