Writing Project 2: Rhetorical Analysis of An Advertisement
Choose an advertisement that is compelling to you. An ad that enrages, excites, or motivates you will be easier to analyze. The advertisement can come from the internet and it can be a print ad or a video ad. The thesis for this essay: What stated and/or unstated messages does you chosen ad convey?
To complete this essay, address the following in the body of your essay:
Provide a general summary of the ad. What is the ad for? What is the ad saying or doing? Be as descriptive as you can. (1 paragraph)
How does the author target an audience, respond to an audience, and/or construct an audience? What do you think is the purpose of this ad? (1 paragraph)
Describe the visual and textual strategies of the ad that are used to target the audience. In other words, address how the ad uses (1) ethos, (2) pathos, AND/OR (3) logos to deliver its point. Support how each rhetorical appeal is used with evidence. You may incorporate as many notable strategies you find in the ad as you like. (3-4 paragraphs)
Lastly, you will explain whether you find the rhetorical devices used in the ad effective or not. Explain your reasoning. (1-2 paragraphs)
(Please Note: This essay should also have an introduction and a conclusion.)

Before plunging into the essay, brainstorm. Make sure you are familiar with the product being advertised! Look at the ad from top to bottom, left to right, taking note of anything that seems significant or grabs your attention. Observe elements such as nonverbal gestures, facial expressions, body language, people (age, gender, ethnicity), clothing, background, and/or camera angle if they are relevant.
Minimum Requirements
YOUR ROUGH DRAFT must be at least 4 FULL pages.
YOUR FINAL DRAFT must be between 4-5 FULL pages, complete drafts that include an introduction. body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
ALL DRAFTS must conform to basic MLA formatting (1 in margins, 12-point size Times New Roman font, double spaced, MLA-style header, page numbers, a title, and in-text citations.).
ALL DRAFTS will use college-level prose that is proofread and copy-edited to remove as many errors as possible.
A works cited page must be included as well (You must cite your advertisement to MLA Format standards.
