Fitzgerald’s “The Ice Palace” – Sally Carrol Happer, Harry Bellamy, Roger Paton

Faulkner’s “Dry September” – Hawkshaw the barber, McLendon, Miss Minnie Cooper

Pick 2 characters from 2 different texts to analyze in a 3 page MLA style essay. The analysis may compare two characters and argue parallel or similar characteristics and motivations, OR the analysis may contrast two characters and argue distinct or different characteristics and motivations. In other words, pick 2 characters you find operating similarly and representing similar social issues, or pick 2 characters you find operating differently and showcasing opposing social issues.

For example, do you find Prufrock to be a male version of Sally Carrol Harper? Do you find Hawkshaw as disillusioned and unable to act as Prufrock? Is McLendon the absolute opposite of Prufrock or is McLendon actually in a similar terrified and threatened state as Sally Carrol Harper? Are Sally and Minnie similar creatures or very different women? Which characters are disillusioned in a similar manner, or which characters are disillusioned in differing ways?

The essay should have a clear thesis that presents a compare or contrast position on specific characters, include body paragraphs that make a specific point about how the characters parallel or diverge, and provide textual evidence from the texts to support the compare/contrast analysis. The essay should follow MLA style (format & documentation).
