The previous assignments required you to develop a bibliography and use the Analyzing the Logic of an Article worksheet to evaluate a few of them. In this assignment, you will learn to create a formal annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography contains a summary or evaluation of each source in your bibliography. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited.As you continue to read and add books, documents, and scholarly articles to your research library, you might find it difficult to remember why a piece of scholarly work was useful to a project or research question.
An annotated bibliography can provide you with that information without having to re-read sources again. When writing an annotation, consider each of the questions below.
Introduce the author/s of the text and their central claim or thesis statement. (USE ONLY PUBMED AND GOGGLE SCHOLARS FOR SOURCES/JOURNALS).
Provide a short summary of the source. What is the point of this piece? What topics are covered? How does the author develop or support their argument?
After summarizing the article, try and evaluate the text. Was the author successful in their argument? Why or why not? How does it compare with other sources?
For scientific literature, many of the arguments pertain to whether or not an experiment supported or failed to support an experimental hypothesis. Whether or not the author is successful in the argument often depends on the data. Does the data set convince you that the hypothesis was supported or not?
Your Literature Review assignment this week is to write a complete annotation for each of the resources in your bibliography. Each of your annotations should include the full citation in your discipline’s preferred style. Make sure to keep your entries, clear, concise, and grammatically correct. Place your annotated bibliography in a Word document and submit with your last name in the filename.
Below is a sample of an annotated bibliography. Note that the author included the full bibliographic information for the source in an appropriate citation style.
Waite, Linda J., et al. “Nonfamily Living and the Erosion of Traditional Family Orientations Among Young Adults.” American Sociological Review, vol. 51, no. 4, 1986, pp. 541-554.
The authors, researchers at the Rand Corporation and Brown University, use data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Young Women and Young Men to test their hypothesis that nonfamily living by young adults alters their attitudes, values, plans, and expectations, moving them away from their belief in traditional sex roles. They find their hypothesis strongly supported in young females, while the effects were fewer in studies of young males. Increasing the time away from parents before marrying increased individualism, self-sufficiency, and changes in attitudes about families. In contrast, an earlier study by Williams cited below shows no significant gender differences in sex role attitudes as a result of nonfamily living.
