Evidence-based practice is an approach to clinical decision making that has gained considerable interest and influence during the last decade. The process of evidence-based practice and its application to clinical occupational therapy practice often finds clinicians looking for resources and directions within the workforce when they are ready to work with clients. In today’s consumer driven market, it is even more crucial for new clinicians to understand that therapy too can be “shopped” just as much as the grocery store, which means therapists need to be on their “A” game. This means they must deliver outcomes and ensure that those outcomes are based on evidence- based practices. The demand for maximum quality of care, combined with the need for prudent use of resources has increased pressure on health care professionals to ensure that clinical practice is based on sound evidence.
When there is a knowledge gap or uncertainty, the need for information can be converted into a clinical question. Those clinical questions can be answered by using EBP techniques and interventions. When reviewing your patient and determining if the intervention of choice brings supports EBP therapists should look at 4 components:
- What client or a problem is being considered.
- What treatment or indicator is being considered.
- What outcome or outcomes of interest you would like to measure or achieve.
- Is there a comparison (where relevant).
Assignment: Using the EBSCO Library or the clinical library from PIMA, research and locate an EBP article on occupational therapy and occupational therapy interventions. After you have read the article, write a paper answering the 4 questions above. Students paper should be properly sited, 2-4 pages in length, 1.5 spaced, 11 font times new roman and with proper grammar/spelling. Your paper should be thorough and detailed and have supporting evidence that an understanding of the article and EBP was obtained through reading the chosen article.
Students can choose any article of preference as long as it is an EBP article within occupational therapy. A drop box will be created for assignments to be turned in. No late assignments will be accepted.
