Boys and Girls

In this assignment, you are asked to prepare an eight to ten (8-10) page double-spaced, typed, research-based literary essay. This means that you must use secondary sources to develop and support your topic. Possible secondary sources include scholarly books, academic journal articles, and high-quality internet materials. To help you with the research part of this assignment, you have been provided a reading package with secondary sources you are welcome to use. Regarding internet sources, do not use any more than two (2) in your final Works Cited List. Remember to include your own ideas as well—sometimes we forget to do this in “research” assignments.

You can be thinking about this assignment even now. Your literary research essay is based on the Short Fiction (short stories) module.

1) “Misery” by Anton Chekhov: the theme of isolation and sorrow in the story, or; how the story is a study in character.

2) “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner: how the style of the story reflects its content, or; the theme of madness and retribution in the story.

3) “Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro: how the story is a coming of age story, or; how Munroe shows the vulnerability of both males and females to gender stereotyping; or, how Munro’s setting helps to carry her theme of gender stereotyping.
