Final Exam Eassy

All requests for
special circumstance accommodations have to be made through the registrar’s office.
The final exam is intended to assess your understanding and ability to clearly explain the key
concepts, themes, and issues we covered in our course. You will be evaluated on this basis.
There are two main options. Choose one of the options below A or B.
All choices must include references to at least 3 of the modules and a minimum of 2
assigned readings from the course, and additional assigned readings as necessary. You
may, in addition, use any of the articles I referenced in the modules. (In the later modules, I
hyperlinked to any non-academic examples. You can feel free to use those as well, but cite
them in APA format). You may use media and news articles if you wish, cite them
appropriately.
All papers should be double spaced, Times New Roman font, normal margins and use a APA
citation format. Include a full bibliography.
You do not need an abstract.
Include an APA title page that tells me which option you are choosing, A or B.
All components must be uploaded to CULearn. You can provide a link in your documents to
your google drive/cloud for creative components.
I can answer specific clarification questions around the phrasing of questions. I cannot give
advice about the best content to choose.
Make sure you read to the end of the document. There is a bonus question.
Option A – Traditional Essay
In this course is about contemporary issues in Communication and Media Studies. To explore
these, you were introduced to five themes in the field: Communications as a discipline;
Privacy; Media Activism; Framing; and, Regulation.
Choose a module. Choose a contemporary issue. Explain how this theme relates to a
specific contemporary issue in media and communication. For example, you could look at
how communication regulations relate to Instagram influencers or net neutrality. You could
look at how theories about slacktivism relate to Black Lives Matter protests.
COMS 1002 – TAKE HOME EXAM, SUMMER 2020
If there are different approaches to understanding the contemporary issue, explain which ones
you think are the best ones and which you feel are not as good.
I expect your answer to be able to explain how the issue interrelates with other themes and
briefly reference at least two other of the modules. In you choose Black Lives Matter, for
example, and made your main module choice be Activism vs Slacktivism, you could make
links between activism and the framing modules, activism and the regulation module or
activism and the privacy module.
The traditional essay choices should make a synthetic whole. I am looking for you to be
able to integrate the concepts and apply them. This is an extension of what you have
already been doing in your homework work so far in the course. Min 4-5 double
spaced-pages 12pt font, normal margins.
Option B – Creative Option: Multimedia Montage and Issues Outline
In this course is about contemporary issues in Communication and Media Studies. To explore
these, you were introduced to five themes in the field: Communications as a discipline;
Privacy; Media Activism; Framing; and, Regulation.
Choose a contemporary issue in Communication and Media Studies that relates to the course
(for example, Instagram influencers or teen’s social media privacy).
The Multimedia Montage and Issues Outline comes in two parts:
Part 1:
Mave a video. Create a 2 to 3 minute creative mashup of images, text, video, sound, and so
on, which communicates substantive ideas about your issue. You can use headlines, news
photos, news clips, clips you record yourself, your own art, and so on. Through the
combination of images, sound and text, explain how this specific contemporary issue in
media and communication relates to three of the themes in this course.
The goal is to use digital production tools (iMovie, Powerpoint-to-movie format, etc.) in
practice to craft your message through visual communication.
Part two:
The Issues Outline comprises an overview and critical reflection of communication and
media drawing on a topic related to the course and provide a synthesis of key concepts,
themes, and issues we covered in our course.
COMS 1002 – TAKE HOME EXAM, SUMMER 2020
Write a min 3 page essay explaining the contemporary problem or issue, you can write longer
if you wish, there is no max for this essay.
Which concepts and themes does your issue relate to. What core concepts are the choices in
images and clips mean to explain? How was your media montage able to communicate these
ideas in ways that the written word may not be able to do as effectively. Why did you make
the choices you did in your video?
Reference a minimum of three modules and 2 assignment readings from the course and
additional readings as necessary.
Bonus Question (up to + 2 points of the exam grade).
Is there anything in this course that you have learned that you have not yet had a chance to
explain and that you would like me to know?
