Identify a Public Health Report or Article

The purpose of this article is to examine the obesity prevalence among primary school students by finding the correlation between obesity and physical activity. This study used 1946 students between the ages of 7-11, with 885 females and 1061 males. The method used to assess the obesity rate of the students was their height and body composition measurement, vertical jump test, a 30-meter sprint, and statistical analysis using SPSS 22 programs.

The results demonstrate that females at the ages of 7 had the highest level of obesity, and between the ages of 7-12, 12 % are overweight, 9.5% obese, and 21.5% overweight and obese. For males, the highest level of obesity is the age of 7, where between the ages of 9-10, 8.8% are overweight, 11.3% are obese, and 20.1% are overweight and obese. However, the relationship between BMI and physical fitness is a negative correlation, but between age and BMI there is a positive correlation based on the SPSS analysis. Nevertheless, the study demonstrated that as overweight percentages decrease, the obesity rate tends to increase across all age groups in the study. For example, children that stay indoors and watch television shows to be obese, yet not overweight due to lack of physical activity and lack of a balanced diet.

Therefore, the study concluded that diet and physical activity parameters are good intervention methods to prevent obesity in children. The study suggested that physical activity plays a significant role in childhood obesity and other health problems, psycho-social welfare, and lifestyle models. Additionally, because of the significant finding of the correlation between BMI and physical fitness, the study determines that intervention methods aiming at physical activity along with, balanced nutrient, low-calorie intake, and appropriate eating behavior can reduce the prevalence of obesity.

What you would do differently to improve understanding and application if you were the author?

I think using BMI as the basis for whether you are overweight, obese, or fit is not accurate because a person can have a normal BMI, but be very unhealthy due to a lack of a healthy diet and lifestyle. Additionally, I think they should have a post-assessment that would discuss if the same students from the study continued to watch their diet and do the physical activity. Would the student’s BMI change and obesity level decreased and by how much percentage compared to 5-10 years duration since they partake in the intervention. This way we would also see if environmental, biological, or social factors have any contribution to obesity. For example, maybe some children as they got older were still or became overweight even though they followed the same routine as the other students.
