Topic 1: Procrastination?
Discuss the critical thinking decision to return to school. Deciding to return to school after being away for a while is a big deal. I was a procrastinator when it came to school. Although the name Oni means the word ‘today’, and it was given to me because I was a person who got things done today. However, that is not how I was when it came to school. According to Robbins (2004) there is no simple answer to procrastination. Robbins (2004) suggested several factors could be to blame:
· Fragile self-esteem
· Fear of making mistakes
· Being a perfectionist
· Desire to maintain control
· Lack of motivation
· Poor organization
· Competing claims on time
Students often mention time being a factor, as school may take away from being with family, home projects, and having a social life. The key to being in class is a schedule. For years I taught classes on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and habit #3 is to put first things first. Make yourself a schedule and stick to it. Family first and all else will fall into place. Covey’s rules helped me, as it is the only way that I can be a mother, a wife, work three jobs and go to school. I stick to my schedule and I do not procrastinate!

Topic 2: Thinking – What is Critical Thinking?
Has your train of thought developed and changed throughout the years? How will your thinking change 10 years from now after going to college, reading books, and writing papers? What if you had not read any books, gone to college, or written any papers–would your critical thinking skills be any different? Explain.
The decision to return to school after a period of absence is a significant step that requires critical thinking. Personally, I struggled with procrastination in the past, but my commitment to education has helped me overcome this tendency. This essay explores the factors contributing to procrastination and the importance of effective time management. It also delves into the concept of critical thinking and its transformative power, discussing how it can shape one’s thoughts and perspectives over time. Finally, it explores the potential impact of education, reading, and writing on critical thinking skills.
Procrastination is a complex behavior with various underlying factors, as highlighted by Robbins (2004). Fragile self-esteem, fear of making mistakes, perfectionism, the desire to maintain control, lack of motivation, poor organization, and competing claims on time can all contribute to procrastination. Time management is often cited as a challenge for students, as they juggle academic pursuits with family, home responsibilities, and social life.
To counteract procrastination, implementing a structured schedule is crucial. Following Stephen Covey’s principles from his book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” particularly habit #3 of “putting first things first,” can be transformative. By prioritizing tasks and adhering to a schedule, individuals can effectively manage their time and strike a balance between personal and academic commitments. This approach has personally helped me fulfill my roles as a mother, wife, employee, and student without succumbing to procrastination.
The Evolution of Critical Thinking:
Critical thinking is an essential skill that evolves over time. Exposure to college education, reading books, and writing papers can significantly impact one’s critical thinking abilities. These experiences broaden our perspectives, challenge our assumptions, and foster analytical thinking. As we engage in intellectual discourse, critically evaluate information, and construct arguments, our thinking processes become more nuanced and sophisticated.
Education plays a crucial role in shaping critical thinking skills. By exposing individuals to diverse ideas, theories, and perspectives, it encourages intellectual growth and empowers individuals to question established norms. Reading books and engaging with scholarly literature enhances our knowledge base, fosters critical analysis, and enables us to form evidence-based arguments. Writing papers further cultivates critical thinking as it requires articulating thoughts, conducting research, and synthesizing information into coherent narratives.
Without the exposure to books, college, and writing papers, our critical thinking skills would likely be limited. These experiences provide us with the tools to navigate complex issues, challenge assumptions, and make informed decisions. Critical thinking allows us to evaluate information critically, separate fact from fiction, and approach problems from multiple perspectives. It enables us to engage in meaningful discussions, adapt to new situations, and contribute to positive change in our personal and professional lives.
Conclusion:
The journey from procrastination to personal growth involves embracing critical thinking and effective time management. Overcoming procrastination requires understanding its underlying causes and implementing strategies such as scheduling and prioritization. Moreover, education, reading, and writing play a pivotal role in nurturing critical thinking skills. By engaging in these activities, we broaden our knowledge, challenge our assumptions, and develop the capacity to analyze and synthesize information. As we progress through our educational journey and engage in intellectual pursuits, our thinking will continue to evolve, ultimately shaping our perspectives and empowering us to make informed decisions that contribute to personal and societal growth.
