I’ve been working in a Hospice setting
Throughout my experience working in a Hospice setting, I have encountered various opportunities to engage with the principles of Healthy People 2020 and the objectives of my nursing course. This reflective essay aims to explore my personal growth, thoughts, and feelings during this journey, focusing on the pillars of South University’s College of Nursing Conceptual Framework. Through introspection and analysis, I will share how my perceptions evolved, unexpected lessons learned, and the impact of new knowledge on my thoughts and feelings.
Caring has been at the core of my Hospice experience. Witnessing the compassion and empathy demonstrated by the interdisciplinary team towards patients and their families has been both inspiring and transformative. Through the provision of comfort, support, and emotional connection, I have come to appreciate the significant impact of caring in end-of-life care.
Effective communication has proven crucial in Hospice care. Engaging in difficult conversations, such as discussing prognosis or addressing patients’ fears and concerns, has challenged me to develop my communication skills. By actively listening, using therapeutic communication techniques, and being sensitive to non-verbal cues, I have witnessed the power of open and honest dialogue in fostering trust and facilitating understanding.
Critical thinking has played a pivotal role in my practice within the Hospice setting. Each patient’s unique circumstances require careful assessment, analysis, and decision-making.
