As always, the goal of the COMM 12 weekly journal entries is to give you the opportunity to combine your observations, thoughts, and experiences with the course content provided online and in our textbook. What in the textbook, the module, or the online discussion stood out to you, and why? Feel free to reference more than one part of the course content. Do you have a personal reflection or thought about something relevant in real life? There is really no one right way to write a journal entry.
You can write your entry diary-style, analytical essay-style, poetically, or, really, any way you like. Remember, though, that these journal entries are academic submissions. Please do keep your language appropriate, make an effort toward spelling, grammar, and capitalization, and express your thoughts in generally well-considered manner.
You may feel confused or unsure about your submission. Don’t worry. I will be in touch with you if anything is wrong. There is VERY little structure required here, so you should feel confident as long as you follow the basic guidelines listed above.
Each entry will receive a grade of 50 points (complete), 10-40 points (incomplete) or 0 points (no entry submitted.) The 8 weekly journal entries are worth 400 total points toward your final grade. Remember that at least three full, content-rich paragraphs are expected.
——————————-content from this week
Module 8 includes an article reflecting upon one student’s study abroad experience, a valuable TED talk by Pico Lyer explores the widespread reality that many people are living in a place other than what they think of as “home.” Next is an article documenting the racist “joke” and subsequent missteps and misunderstandings following the crash of an Asiana Airlines jet in San Francisco. These items are followed by a fascinating (and long) article exploring the gradual conversion of a woman who was raised within a strict and hate-filled activist group, as well as an interesting and important group discussion addresses a statistically significant issue for today’s high tech companies.
In this module, you’ll find a link to Discussion #8: Disability Culture. Please read and consider the prompt as well as your classmates’ comments, then add your own response. Check back in to read the comments of classmates who responded after you, as well as any additional information the instructor may have added during the discussion. Be sure to reply to at least three classmates’ posts as well.
The module also includes a link to this week’s Journal Entry.
The entire module should be completed within one week, with the usual deadlines for the Journal Entry and Online Discussion.

This week’s module introduced a diverse range of topics and content that left a lasting impression on me. One particular article that resonated with me was the study abroad style diary shared by a college student. It provided valuable insights into the transformative nature of studying abroad and the lessons learned from immersing oneself in a different culture. Reading about the student’s experiences reminded me of my own study abroad journey and reinforced the profound impact it had on my personal growth and global perspective.
The TED talk by Pico Lyer titled “Where is Home” was thought-provoking and deeply reflective. Lyer’s exploration of the concept of home and the notion that many people are living in a place different from their perceived home struck a chord with me. It made me contemplate the idea of home and how it goes beyond geographical boundaries, connecting to a sense of belonging and emotional attachment. This talk reminded me that home can be a fluid and subjective concept, shaped by our experiences and relationships.
Another article that caught my attention was the documentation of a racist incident following the Asiana Airlines crash in San Francisco. It highlighted the importance of addressing racism and the negative impact of perpetuating stereotypes. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for cultural sensitivity and understanding, particularly in times of crisis. It reinforced the significance of promoting empathy, respect, and inclusion in our interactions with people from different backgrounds.
Additionally, the article about the conversion of a woman raised in a hate-filled activist group provided a captivating and insightful perspective on the power of empathy and open dialogue. It showcased the potential for personal growth and transformation when individuals are exposed to diverse viewpoints and engage in constructive conversations. It served as a reminder of the importance of empathy and understanding, even in the face of deeply ingrained beliefs.
The group discussion on disability culture was enlightening and fostered a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities. It emphasized the need for inclusivity and equal opportunities for all members of society. Engaging with my classmates’ perspectives broadened my knowledge and allowed me to see the issues from different angles.
Overall, this module sparked introspection and provided valuable insights into various aspects of life and society. It encouraged me to reflect on the significance of cultural exchange, the concept of home, the impact of racism, the power of empathy, and the importance of inclusivity. These topics not only relate to our course but also hold relevance in real-life situations, reminding me of the ongoing work needed to create a more inclusive and compassionate world.
